When you travel to foreign locations you need to be aware that your currency may not work there. Because there is not one single set of world banknotes that would work universally, you have to be prepared to exchange your home currency for that of the area you visit. If you have decided you want to begin collecting, and are new to the task there are many things to keep in mind. First of all you should start start locally. Check your personal cash for old notes. Check around with local antique stores and pawn shops, as they often carry some world banknotes that may be good for your collection to get going right away.
Second, storage is vital. You will want to make sure that you are storing your collection in acid free, water proof, and relatively humidity free locations. There are many collection books that can be purchased that will hold the note safely. However you will still want to make sure that you provide proper storage of the book.
When you are looking to branch out, check out auctions. There are public local auctions and online auctions that may offer you a wide variety of notes to bid on and purchase. As you become more of a collector, it helps to have a list of missing notes with you when you go. Some collectors do not, and realize after they are home they have two identical common notes.
It also pays to understand the local verbiage that explains the money. For example if you are visiting London you may be asked to pay in Pounds. If you are in The United States you will be asked for Dollars. Japan will ask for Yen. In Mexico it is Pesos.
Be prepared to not rely on credit cards. Some areas will not accept them. Other areas may charge fees for the convenience. If you are unsure, you may want to talk to your travel agent.
Until the true value of money is equalized worldwide, true world banknotes cannot be created. If we were ever to reach that stage it will surely make travel easier. It is also speculated that a true world currency will help equalize the economy.
