A market place is often mentioned in the context of a place where goods and services are exchanged for cash. There is however a different kind of market. This is the foreign exchange market which is an international money market. Here, it is all about trading currencies.

The foreign exchange or forex market transactions are carried out founded on supposition about how the exchange rates of various rates will rise and fall. The goal is to sell the high value currency at a profit to those who need it. There is also the selling off foreign exchange with a lower value before their value falls even further.

Forex is done within a broad system that connects those who want to buy or sell one currency or another. These are importers, exporters, banks, multi-national corporations, day traders or short-term traders, off-shore investors and Fore exchange bureaus for whom this is their core business. There are hedge investors who participate in Fore to minimize the risk presented by currency value fluctuations. They do this to cushion themselves against downward dips that may reduce the value of their investments.

It is crucial for those who are involved in the market of exchanging currency to be up to date on the exchange rates of different currencies. Traders stay updated on this and communicate the information via the internet, through the phone and by fax. There is no such thing as a central exchanging forum sold or bought in this market. Foreign exchange is therefore said to be an over the counter market.

One main characteristic of the currency exchange market is that it is a very liquid market. This means that there is never a lack of buyers and sellers to buy and sell the currency one wants to trade in. This means that it is easy to make a quick buy or sale. This translates into very high daily sales averages, which was put at $1.9 trillion in April 2004.

Another fact about the currency exchange market is that it is a market that never closes, more so in major capitals like Tokyo, London and New York. Thus, traders can immediately react to changes in currency values to maximize gains. They can also act to minimize losses.

The final characteristic of the Forex market is that it is an operation whose costs are low, the daily high averages notwithstanding. The costs traders incur are a spread and commissions payable to their brokers. This ranges from $20 to $150 depending on the trade volume. Traders can exercise the alternative of doing direct currency trading in the market by so doing, they only incur the cost of the spread and the amount a trader will part with to buy currency from a trader.
