The financial crisis unfortunately has taught us all that we need to reevaluate the way we use our money. Surely everyone considers that in the past they were too reckless about their finances and did not save as much as it would have been necessary. No one really knows how far back the history of money dates, but is obvious that these beginnings still influence us today. It is obvious that ancient people's need to trade their goods outside their local areas led to the invention and firs use of money. This was a great discovery and people could go outside their borders and have a universal coin, which facilitated commerce between distinct nations.

In our times we mostly encounter paper money, which can be used only in a particular area or country and has to be exchanged in a different currency when one wants to travel abroad. This would have seemed a bit awkward in the past when people were used to gold and silver coins. However, nowadays gold is too rare and people too lazy for this kind of money.

Nevertheless, there were some advantages for this type of currency. People never needed to resort to exchange offices or lose money due to the exchange rate and, obviously, gold coins are more attractive that the annoying paper bills we have to deal with today.

People still buy gold coins although there are no signals that the use of such money will be reintroduced. Many people believe that investing in gold coins is a good idea, especially in this time of recession when they may help us protect the little savings we may still have and also own some collectible items with a true historical value. One of the coins mostly used for this purpose is the British sovereign, which is appreciated by most con collectors and which is also a piece of British history as it dates from 1489.

The great advantage of buying gold sovereigns is that one can acquire a true piece of history together with a great investment. It does not matter if one is a collector or just investor, buying gold sovereigns is a good idea for both categories of people. However, it is crucial to choose a reliable dealer and pay really good attention to the prices.
