Trading options as a strategic investment is often mistaken to be the route opted for by risk takers. In reality, option trading is no different than dealing with bonds and shares on the open market. All you need to do is abide by certain basics of trading. Only then will you be able to build a secure base from which to build your wealth. Managed well, this method can in fact enhance your portfolio.

To begin with, you will need to reduce your overall investment costs. This can be done by selling calls against stocks you own on a monthly basis. A skill you will need to acquire is spotting support and resistance points in a trend. Over the period of a year, you may be able to sell all stock that you own and free up funding. With these funds, you will be able to invest in newer options.

The next step in options trading is to be able to get paid to buy stocks. If you want to invest in a stock without too much of spending, you can use the selling naked puts method. What this means is that you sell puts on the stocks you are interested in each month at a price that is lower than what the stock is trading at. If it goes up, your put will expire and you retain your money. If it comes down to a price you prefer, then you can buy it and wait it out for the profits to show. Once again, the skill of analyzing trends is essential here.

Options trading seem easy after a while. But then you can't remain stagnant and will want to experiment with more complex means of trading. That is where option spread trading comes in. Here you will deal with multiple contracts spanning a month or more. You deal with two contracts that form the legs of the spread. Your buying and selling of puts will depend on your analysis of the companies' profits.

If you are going to get into options as a strategic investment, you have to understand the market thoroughly. Used in the right manner, they can prove invaluable to enhancing your portfolio as well as your investments. The range of strategies they put forth are immense and worth delving into.
