Crafting A Krugerrand Strategy

Nothing compares to the cultural cache of the vaunted Krugerrand. It's a highly-valued, once-controversial currency that is, in essence, a highly-portable form of gold investment. As the global recession lurches towards depression, more and more investors are moving towards gold to help them retain the value of their wealth and hedge against deflation. When once gold-mongers were derided as misguided -- it seems they may well have the last laugh. Indeed, it seems gold is more than a viable investment option -- according to Marc Faber, the acclaimed international investment specialist, the two best investment options for the next decade are gold and land.

Any coin collector or investor can tell you no collection is complete with a selection of Krugerrands. Of course, buying -- and selling for that matter -- can be problematic, especially if you're looking for a fair deal. As they're essentially a gold commodity, the best way to know if you're getting a great deal on your Krugerrands is keeping tabs on the gold market. Now, you can do this with a quick search on your engine of choice, but you can also get the most current "spot" prices from trusted gold brokers. Yes, as the value of gold rises -- and it's believed to keep rising -- the more valuable your Krugerrands will be.

For those of you who would rather have someone else deal with the appraisals of your gold investments, including your Krugerrands, then you can go through respected brokers. Now, if you would like to have someone actually sell your gold, in most cases, you can depend on these same brokers. Any broker that can buy or appraise your Krugerrands should be licensed to sell them. Of course, this does not mean they can expedite the buying or selling -- demand is what it is. But, most gold brokers have a number of trusted buyers, so, they generally have more options that the average individual buyer or seller.

Now, if you have issues with gold brokers -- after all, they are more concerned with the actually gold and not the numismatic value of Krugerrands -- then you could choose to approach a coin dealer. A reputable coin dealer can be a little difficult to find than a gold broker. This is because gold brokers have to be licensed by the state -- coin dealers, on the other hand, need no such licensing. Regardless, it is possible to find a reputable coin dealer who can get you the Krugerrands you need. The beauty of this South African currency is the fact it's just that: a currency.

Granted, once you're armed with an actual currency, you can find dealers who can buy and sell your "coins" at the going rate. Now, it's worth mentioning that numismatic values can differ from the going gold rates. Although the Krugerrand tends to get bought and sold in accordance to the gold rates, there are some older Krugerrands that are more valuable than the ones on the market. In the end, what you want is a fair deal for a fair price. In terms of investing in gold, you'd be hard-pressed to find a better investment than Krugerrands.
