Gold As A Literary Character
Just like people chase gold in real life, fictional characters do it in literature. Authors have valued this metal for its properties and functionality, but most of all as a precious ornament and a symbol with very precise connotations.
One of the places where gold is often mentioned is Oriental literature. Books written then recognize its role as a symbol of nobility just like it is often considered today. Ancient descriptions of lavish gold jewelry, belonging to authors who lived hundreds of years B.C., are not incidental.
In Ancient Egypt, gold was one of the very first metals to be exploited buying gold was a common practice. Therefore, Egyptian art and literature reflect its importance, and it is sometimes even called the flesh of the gods. Descriptions of pharaohs, gods and goddesses include references to the precious metal since they are the ones worthy of its qualities.
Ancient writings about gold don't stop here. In Western mythologies, such as Greek and Roman, authors make frequent references to it when they want to symbolize ultimate perfection. It is also a sign of absolute power. Such a story that survived hundreds of years after it was written is that of King Midas. He is often depicted in ancient frescoes and these were an important inspiration for Renaissance artists. Midas is best-known for his greatest wish, which ultimately comes true: he is able to turn everything that he touches into gold.
Its been centuries since people, even in real life, have been trying to turn random objects or materials into gold. This has been not only the desire of Midas but also of many people and fictional characters practicing alchemy. This age-old practice, which is at the same time a philosophy, is also associated with the secret of longevity. Moreover, its followers are also interested in achieving ultimate wisdom.
There are recent and successful books describing this practice, selling millions of copies all around the globe. Harry Potter is one famous example of a book which people read in so many languages and cultures. But older references can be found in and Dante's Divine Comedy, for example. These are all fictional books, and many more can be found after a thorough research.
