How Does Science Make Use Of Gold?
Gold became familiar to us in the shape of different jewels, watches or decorations. Both men and women appreciate the beauty of this metal because it stands for fortune, glory, and royalty. Science has analyzed this metal since ancient times and has discovered it can be useful in more than one domain.
The first feature which makes gold so precious is that it successfully resists corrosion. Adventurers used to discover chests with gold coins or jewels which maintained a very pleasant aspect even after passing through a shipwreck or after staying buried for several years. On archaeological sites people have been able to discover jewels and coins dating back to the time of the pharaohs. Applied as a protective coating for other less resistant metals gold increase the resistance to corrosion of those metals.
The second very important set of features gold has is malleability and ductility. That is why gold can be transformed in translucent sheets reflecting infrared light. Space industry found this feature very useful and added these sheets in the sun-visors of spacesuits and in the making of many artificial satellites.
Gold salts are used in medicine. They have anti-inflammatory properties which make them a remedy for people with arthritis and tuberculosis. Restorative dentistry also uses gold, because crowns made of gold are more efficient than porcelain ones.
Gold conducts electricity. This recommended it as the material to be used in aircraft cockpit windows where gold is inserted and electricity passes through it do prevent ice forming or to remove it from the window.
In ancient times people thought that something as beautiful as gold could not harm the human body. They used it as medicine but also used it as decoration for different types of gourmet foods or drinks. They were right; gold has no taste, no smell and no nutritional value.
Because of its universally recognized value gold was always used as coin for trade or as an investment. The ones who can afford to buy gold bullion must know that this is one of the safest way to maintain the value of their fortune.
