If you have a lot of money to spare and are asking the oft repeated question 'how do I invest my money' then the answer would obviously be somewhere safe with good returns over a period of time. A good investor is always looking out for making maximum profits with minimum amount of risk taking. However, there is no zero risk investment. You could invest in gold, silver and the like or you may invest in stocks or mutual funds as an alternative.

The shares of a company are sold and you can buy these stocks from any broker, paying the price of each share. Most stock markets have given many investors a good return for their investment, especially in the long run. Stock markets are very volatile and liable to fluctuate on a day-to-day basis; hence it does offer a high risk factor. But over a long period of time, these fluctuations even out and the stock market has been historically proved to recover in the long run.

If you are a beginner asking the question of how do I invest my money, then the way to go would be mutual funds. Here you are essentially giving your money as an investment to a group of investors who do the investing for you. These experts put your money in different kinds of stocks or even bonds and any other form of asset. This would depend on the company policy and their rules for investing.

By buying shares from these companies, you become a shareholder as you have given them the funds required for them to invest and make more money. Your investments get a variety and as this is a diversified form of investment done by experts, you need not worry much about how do I invest my money.

When you invest in any venture, you have to analyze the risk and the return on your investment. It would seem that mutual funds don't carry much risk as your money is being put in a lot of baskets and you have stock in different types of industries. Even if there is a fall in the stocks of one industry, this can be offset by the rising stock of another industry and hence you don't lose much.
