Saint Gaudens Gold Coins as an Investment
When buying gold as an investment, investors tend to get stuck on the same thought, "what gold coins should I start my portfolio with?" This is a very common question and one that you should not worry about finding the answer to. It is true that there are several gold coins to choose from, including bullion coins to rare coins from all over the world. Amongst all the gold coins, one the most popular and highest demanded worldwide is the Saint Gaudens gold coin.
Saint Gaudens '$20 Double Eagles' were minted in 1907 by the U.S. Mint. President Theodore Roosevelt had taken great interest to U.S. Coinage design and wanted to beautify it. Roosevelt hired his close friend, world renowned sculptor Augustus Saint Gaudens to design the coin. The plan was to have Saint-Gaudens design several different coins over the next several years.
Saint Gaudens gold coins were minted from 1907 until 1933 when the gold confiscation act ended production of the coin. During the gold confiscation, thousands of Saint Gaudens were melted down making the surviving coins very rare on the market today.
The Saint Gaudens coin was beautifully designed with the front featuring Lady Liberty holding a torch in her right hand, and a wreath in her left. Wrapping around the top of the coin from left to right, the word 'Liberty' appears above Lady Liberty's head. The year each individual coin was minted is found to the lower right of Liberty. Investors and collectors should be aware that some years, especially 1907, are much more rare than others making some Saint Gaudens coins value much greater then others. The reverse side of the Saint Gaudens gold coin depicts the image of the majestic flying eagle above the sun with the words 'In God We Trust' wrapped above the sun. Above the eagle, the words 'United States of America' and Twenty Dollars is displayed.
In 1986 the U.S. Mint reintroduced the obverse side design of the Saint Gaudens gold coin, using the design on the American Eagle gold bullion coin. The American Eagle was the first gold bullion coin minted by the U.S. Mint for investment purposes, and consists of 22 karats of gold. The American Eagles are also very popular bullion coins for IRA gold investment portfolios. The American Eagle gold bullion coin an excellent choice for investors looking to have a little bit of history from the Saint Gaudens associated with their coins while establishing a gold 401k and gold IRA.
