The metals silver and gold are beautiful even without embellishments, with their warm or cool gleam, and in the hands of an craftsman they can become true works of art. Silver coins have long been valued not only for the metal they contain and their barter price but simply for the beauty of the workmanship involved in making them. Often times even the early silver coinage were designed for beauty as much as function.

Some of the first recorded coins are from 650 BC. The silver gold coin was made from a naturally occurring mix of silver and gold called Electrum. Some of the earliest coins made from pure silver and gold are the Dinar and the Dirham. The Dinar was compose of gold and the Dirham of silver and began around the seventh century.

While silver has always been a metal considered valuable and precious in the United States there was a disruption in the production of the silver coin due to a shortage of the silver. From 1804-1836 there simply was not enough silver available to mint the coins. This changed however with the discovery of large amounts of silver in Nevada and production of these silver coins resumed.

Over the years coins have changed in denominations and designs. Many designers have left their mark on history by designing the faces or the backs of coins. Some famous designers have left their their concept of just how Lady Liberty should appear on a silver dollar which will be traded and collected for years to come.

A recent silver dollar type certainly deserves a mention. That is the silver eagle coins and though they are relatively recent in introduction they have gained wide popularity among collectors. Collectors of silver dollars may often include these unique coins in their collections.

While older pure silver denominations may be difficult to acquire they can be found through collectors, auctions or private sales. Usually collectors of coins will specialize in a particular set or even a particular mint. There are few limits to what parameters a collector can place upon their collection.

Collectors have an entire world and history to choose from when they focus their collection. Some choose to collect mint or proof edition silver coinage. Proof or burnished or even bullion coins are special productions which are often limited in numbers and where they can be obtained. Bullion coins might only be available through the mint or through bullion dealers.

A particular series of coins with a specific mint mark may be the focus of a collector. Some collectors can easily find most coins needed to consider their collection full. Other collectors may have missing coins which take years to find, and sometimes the lure to the collector may well be in the thrill of the hunt.
