Scientific digital imaging is merely the use of digitally enhanced image processing, or image acquisition, for scientific purposes. It is simply the process of creating images, be they retrieved from a physical scene or illustration, and processing, compressing, storing or displaying them. In science, this form of technology proves very useful.

This process can actually comply with the use of very complex algorithms for image processing, which in turn offers a more accurate performance at simple tasks that would not be otherwise possible with the use of mere analog mediums.

The main idea of this process is that it allows the implementation of complex algorithms for image processing, therefore offering a more difficult level of execution at the simplest of tasks that would be impossible for analog mediums and the like.

Furthermore, it is also used in hospitals to treat patients. Law enforcement agencies and government officials use it in forensic science to solve crimes by identifying criminals or examining evidence. It can create a window of insight for doctors who are trying to help their patients find a cure for an illness by providing visual help.

Actually processing the data from this method is executed through the use of a computer that will process images using a technology that is extremely advanced. It was developed in the 1960s between several facilities of science that also worked on satellite imagery among other achievements. It is a convenient and relatively cheap method to use, therefore it the most popular.

It also is capable of being used for feature extraction, pattern recognition, signal analysis, classification and more. It employs the techniques of pixelization, linear filtering, principle components analysis, partial differential equations, wavelets, and neural networks. Computer chips can convert data from censors into color and proceed to correct them in a file formatting.

The uses of the technology ranges from pattern recognition, feature extraction and signal analysis to classification. It uses techniques like pixelization, linear filtering, principle components analysis, wavelets and neural networks. Computer chips convert data from censors into color. They can also correct the pictures themselves.

When any image is edited, it can be done in a way that will enhance the actual picture in more flattering, informing or entertaining ways. Magazines use it to retouch their models. Law enforcement uses to to see if an image has been tampered with. The FBI may use it to confirm a criminal's identity through forensic science. And scientists use it for research.

The Society for Imaging Science and Technology, or the IS&T, is a society that promotes scientific research and education. The first film to use scientific digital imaging processing was "Westworld" in 1973. It is merely the art of creating, studying, altering and researching certain data and drawing additional wisdom from them.
