What You Do When You Are Retired
By the time that you are 50 you have been in the groove for at least 30 years. You have done the career, home ownership, raised a family, owned nice cars and done family vacations. You think you're through the challenging times and it should be all downhill from here. If you retired, what the hell would you do with yourself?
When you talk to a lot of folks who have retired they comment that they don't know how they had time to go to work. I am one of those and have found that what I do breaks down into 4 categories.
Investment Management: I go to the bank a lot. There is the day to day money in and money out. There is a nest egg that has gotten up its momentum and I have to monitor and adjust the placement of this money to balance return and risk. It takes time, thought and action to keep the nest egg growing. You do not retire and coast on your income. You need to keep an eye on markets and managers.
Kids and Parents: You are at your peak years at 50. Your children are just starting out and your parents are winding down. Both groups need some help from you or they just don't do as well. They can't. The young ones think they know it all but they don't. It seems the parents have forgotten a lot of what they knew. In some cases this is a reality. In most it is just that the world is changing and they are slowing down. In both cases, you do not want to take over their lives but you do want to assist them at those times when they really need it even if they say they don't want it.
Health: For most folks 50 is a time when it is imperative that you be proactive about your health. For women, breast cancer is the number one concern. For men, heart disease is the number one concern. For both genders diet, exercise and monitoring have to become part of the daily routine. You need to book time to shop properly, exercise 5 hours per week and go to the routine check ups and have the routine tests. It all adds up but it is very necessary because you will make you next 20 to 30 years much more enjoyable if you take care of your health.
Relationships: At 50 you are just finishing a very busy time in life. You and whomever you have been closest to have done some very hard things together. By the time you are in your 70's and 80's your body is starting to break down. You have a 10 to 30 year window, health permitting, in which to enjoy your partner or at least the people who are closest to you.
Once you have taken care of all of these things, if you have some time left over you can play and have fun. You can do some volunteering if that makes you fulfilled. As you get older your energy level drops off and you need more rest. The list above will keep you more than busy while you are awake.
