Lessons From A Trading Coach - Don't Overlook The Small Details
One of the lessons my trading coach taught me right from the beginning is the need for paying attention to detail. It might not seem important at the time, but if it is not managed properly it can cause major issues later on. One area that many traders find easy to overlook or put off is the proper recording of their trading activities. It is easy to understand - it can be uninteresting and monotonous but at the same time it is essential.
When you think about it, there are various reasons why it is so important to document your trades well. If you are defined by the tax office in your country as a trader versus an investor, you will require the income and expenses for your tax return. Each country has different rules on when you are considered an investor and when you are considered a trader, so you need to know which applies to you.
Without recording your trades you will not be able to track your trading performance accurately. Trading performance should be tracked on a monthly, quarterly and yearly basis. These records allow you to gain an accurate picture of how well your trading business is performing. It will give you the information on your system probabilities and allow you to compare the performance to previous periods. Some people may actually find it uncomfortable to track their performance so closely and prefer not to know the truth of how well or not their trading is performing.
Record keeping might be boring, but it must be done. There are several methods to make it less of a chore. There are a number of specialized software programs which have been written especially for trade recording. They allow you to record your trades, update them and export the details if required.
If you are a short term trader, you will be completing a higher volume of trades and so it is even more important to record the trades as they happen. One last tip is to make sure you have a data backup plan - you need to make sure your data is safe.
